Morecambe Bay PCT (Primary Care Trust) through Andrea Loudon, Head of Pharmacy and medicine Management, and her team of Prescribing Support Pharmacists under the Project Leadership of Simon Butterworth, are in the process of developing an innovative approach to both benzodiazepine control and reduction in prescription medication. They are working on a "whole system" approach which involves prescribing, dispensing and the patient.
BCNC (Benzodiazepine Co-operation not Confrontation) as a group would recommend this approach as being a step in the right direction in the battle to eliminate the problems caused by this type of medication. We would suggest that their approach be followed by other PCTs who should take advice from MBPCT.
The following paperwork has been reproduced , by approval, from works produced by MBPCT Medicines Management Team for which we thank them.

Old problem; chlordiazepoxide
We feel justified in suggesting that the drug should be used with circumspection and scepticism until the results of controlled trials are available

CSM Advice on use of benzodiazepines
1. Benzodiazepines are indicated for the short-term relief of anxiety that is severe, disabling or subjecting the individual to unacceptable distress, occurring alone or in association with insomnia or short term psychosomatic, organic or psychotic illness.
2. The use of benzodiazepines to treat short-term “mild” anxiety is inappropriate and unsuitable.
3. Benzodiazepines should be used to treat insomnia only where it is severe, disabling, or subjecting the individual to extreme distress.
