It started with one little sleeping pill at night and grew into a horrendous addiction, an addiction which saw Peter lose almost everything. Sadly like many people he for a long time did not realise his growing list of bizarre symptoms were a direct result of his addiction to sleeping pills. You can hear of the various symptoms long term use of benzodiazepines caused Peter such as impaired memory, agorophobia, anxiety, blunted emotions (feeling like a zombie). However with determination he eventually managed to get off the pills and gradually as the months and years went by his cognitive and anxiety and other withdrawal effects returned to normal and he bounced back to life Alive and Kicking!

Peter Ritsen after recovering from the damage and withdrawal effects of long term benzodiazepines went on to form the well known organisation the Council for Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction (CITA) which helped many involuntary addicts free themselves from the grip of benzodiazepine dependency using a gradual tapering program.

This is one of the first books I read and found a lot of identification with the symptoms he described and I found it enlightening and encouraging. I felt reading it I was not alone and felt if he can do it I can do it to.

Alive and Kicking has been read and reviewed by some senior psychiatrists and doctors who wrote enthusiastically and recommended that their colleagues read it!

Alive and Kicking should be on every doctors shelf! I highly rate this book for anyone who is struggling with tranquilliser/sleeping pill addiction or anyone who simply wants to learn more about this problem.
